A Brief History
The Great Central Railway linked the spine of England, including the cities of Manchester, Bradford, Sheffield and Nottingham with London. It was rather a slow route, and in terms of passenger business was never able to compete with the LNER or the Midland Railway. It was however a major player in terms of freight business, carrying a lot of coal and heavy mineral traffic. The Robinsons, designed specifically for this purpose, were graceful engines, built between 1911 and 1920, and generally considered the best heavy freight locomotives right up until the introduction of the Stanier 8Fs in 1935.
