A Brief History

Sugar Palm was outshopped from Doncaster Works in apple green and with LNER livery as no. 525. A year later BR Brunswick green and its new running number 60526 were applied. It would spend virtually the whole of its 14-year career working from York shed (on the site of the National Railway museum), working in particular Newcastle - London Kings Cross services, as well as Newcastle - Liverpool trans-pennine expresses. In its later years it was often used as a stand-by locomotive at York in the case of diesel failure. It was placed in store on 16th September 1962 at Scarborough, where it would ultimately be condemned, having covered 718,432 miles.
