A Brief History
On 26th November 1937 A4 Pacific 4498 was named Sir Nigel Gresley after its designer, and arguably the greatest of all Chief Mechanical Engineers. The nameplate was unveiled by Mr William Whitelaw, Chairman of the LNER. Now, "what is sauce for the goose" is often regarded "as sauce for the gander" and before long another loco, 4462 then Great Snipe, was then renamed William Whitelaw. A precedent must have been set since eleven celebrities were ultimately honoured in this way. The A4s were superb locomotives, veritable greyhounds of the fleet. No-one who saw them will forget the thrill of the moment as they rushed into view accompanied by the melodious mellow-toned chime of their whistle, outpacing everything in sight.
