A Brief History
The diesel railcars were to form a strange short term experiment on the part of British Rail - far shorter term than the railcars in France, Germany and parts of Australia and New Zealand. Designed to trim the costs on the most lightly used parts of the network - particularly where there was dodgy infrastructure - the railcars were not around for long, as the lines shut anyway. In Britain, they were confined to a few routes in the west of England, East Anglia and the North east of Scotland. It was in this last-named location your writer travelled on them on the Aviemore - Elgin route, and also on the St Coombs branch. They were basic indeed, like a bus on wheels - only they felt like a double decker bus about to topple at any point!
