A Brief History
"Why was he born so beautiful, why was he born at all?" Hindsight is of course a wonderful thing, but with reduced work for the railways and so many relatively new and competent Black 5's around, there must be questions about construction of this class so late in the day. Our loco appeared out of Swindon Works in 1955; others arrived as late as 1957. They were distributed on the London Midland, Western and Southern regions. Your writer was fortunate enough to travel behind this delightful engine on the North Wales coast mainline in the summer of 1964 on a heavy Crewe to Holyhead train, a service usually worked at the time by a Pacific class engine. It was in fine fettle, probably following heavy overhaul at Crewe Works.
