A Brief History
One of the joys of rail travel when your writer was still in short trousers wearing white ankle socks was the way in which you were always looked after as a child traveller. A nod and a wink from your parents was all that was required, and railway staff would keep a watchful eye on you throughout your journey. They would help you with changing trains, make sure you were safe throughout your journey, and that someone was on hand to meet you at your destination station. In a gentler and less hurried age, looking after unescorted children was part of the culture of the railways. Your writer recalls being put on a service from London Victoria to be met by relatives at Shoreham in Sussex, and on board he was truly treated as royalty and given a pair of sunglasses! What a thrill! The stock for the journey was 2BIL which meant 2-car Bi Lavatory, so that there were two lavatories in each car. There is nothing to better that today!
These units entered service in 1935 soon after Sir Herbert Walker as General Manager of the Southern Railway introduced third rail electrification. They were steel panelled units with long wooden framed bodies, often operating in multiple with no gangway connection between them. They were smooth running spacious and comfortable with rapid acceleration, and the last of the class was only withdrawn in 1969.
