A Brief History
The "Schools" class locomotives of locomotives of the Southern Railway were a response to persistent requests from the company's running department for a new, powerful engine to replace elderly pre-Grouping 4-4-0's on both the eastern and western sections of the Southern Railway. Introduced in 1930, the initial design came out too heavy, and a slightly scaled-down version was accepted. In particular the designer Richard Maunsell, took the opportunity to reprofile the cab to fit the restricted clearances of the Tonbridge - Hastings line. The class was named after the schools served by the Southern Railway - the posh schools, that is, not the ones where the normal British riff-raff attend. The Southern Railway even staged visits of each engine to the local station serving the school!
