A Brief History
Which was the greatest class of steam loco ever produced in Britain? Many would argue it was the Castle class - they were genuine kings of the castle. The only independent assessment of the motive power of the railway companies came in 1948, following the nationalisation of the railways i.e. the time when they were taken into public ownership. The Castles performed on the old LMS and LNER, vying with the famous Pacifics on those long routes. They performed with great distinction, and it appeared that everything the Pacifics could do, the smaller and more efficient castles could do. Testament to their success was that the first examples appeared in 1923, whilst the last of the class were being outshopped from Swindon works in 1950!
