A Brief History
The large railway centre at Crewe was where your writer first saw the new Warship class of diesel, bringing in regional services from Shrewsbury and the Welsh Marches. To the observer of the railway scene, they stood out, finished in a variety of liveries - desert sand, blue, different shades of brown and red....They also looked very different to any other diesels your writer had seen. And they were very different, based on German design and fitted with hydraulic rather the mechanical engines. But such was the Western Region, successor to God's Wonderful Railway - always different, always coming up with new ideas...Ironically, a number of the class spent their last years working the rival L.S.W.R route from Exeter to London Waterloo!
